I've been thinking about this a bit. Personally, I have been privileged because I was homeschooled. I spent almost all my time surrounded by people that don't accept any sort of fighting (namely Mennonites). There were still some culturally grounded ideas about "debate" that I grew up with, though.
Almost every class they would split us up into two groups and you were given a side and you would have to argue back and forth for your side. No pragmatism, and you were told to stick with it no matter what.
This still happens in some small groups for theology I'm in, too. You get put on a side and try to find arguments for your cause.
